My Grandfather

At the beginning of this week my mother received a couple emails from a person staying they uploaded a video clip of the last recording session my grandfather did with the gospel group, The Pilgrim Travelers in 2002 before he passed. Jesse Whitaker joined the group in 1947, through out his years he sang with secular greats Sam Cooke and Lou Rawls. “Ray Charles credited him as one of his models when he adapted hard gospel style to secular themes to create soul music in the 1950s” (Wikipedia). He had the option to get involved with “secular” music, however he choose to stay singing gospel. The Pilgrim Travels were inducted into the International Gospel Hall of Fame in 2006.
